Treat heat-related work injuries seriously

On Behalf of | Jun 23, 2025 | Injuries |

California’s warm climate is a major draw for many, but for workers exposed to high temperatures, especially during the summer, heat can be a serious health hazard. From construction crews to agricultural workers, landscapers to warehouse staff, countless Californians perform jobs that expose them to potentially dangerous heat levels. When heat-related injuries happen on the job, they must be treated with the seriousness they deserve—not dismissed as minor or expected.

Heat-related injuries can range from heat rash and cramps to heat exhaustion and life-threatening heatstroke. These injuries often develop gradually, beginning with mild symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. Without prompt intervention, workers can quickly deteriorate and suffer organ damage or even death. Even if a worker recovers physically, a serious heat-related incident can result in missed work, long-term health issues and psychological distress.

Being aware and acting promptly

California has workplace safety regulations in place to help prevent these injuries. Employers are required by Cal/OSHA to provide shade, water, rest breaks and training for outdoor workers when temperatures rise. But even with these rules, heat illness still occurs—often because precautions are ignored or improperly implemented. In some cases, employees may not feel empowered to speak up, or they may not recognize the early signs of heat stress.

If you suffer a heat-related injury at work, it’s important to report it immediately and seek medical attention. Waiting too long can worsen your condition and complicate your workers’ compensation claim. Working in the heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be dangerous. When heat-related injuries happen, treat them seriously and take the steps needed to protect your health, your livelihood and your future.
